Separation and Shielding

Separate Power and Signal Lines:

230 V supply lines and signal lines should be laid in separate cables at least 10 cm apart.

Even within the switching cabinet, maintain space between power and signal lines.

Separate Digital and Analogue Lines:

Digital signal/bus lines and analogue signal/sensor lines should be laid in separate cables.

Use Shielded Cables:

For analogue signal lines, use shielded cables to prevent interference.

The shield should be earthed at the entry or exit of the switching cabinet. Ensure the shields are as short as possible and of the largest possible cross-section.

The central earthing point should be >10 mm² and connected to the PE ground wire by the shortest route.

Generally, connect the shield to one side of the switching cabinet only, unless there is a potential equalization with significantly lower resistance than the shield resistance.

Suppressors for Inductivities:

Inductivities in the same switching cabinet, such as contactor coils, should be equipped with suitable suppressors (e.g., RC elements).

Shield High-Field Intensity Components:

Components with high field intensity, such as transformers or frequency inverters, should be shielded with separator plates that have a good ground connection.

Surge Protection

External and Long-Distance Lines:

Apply suitable surge protection measures where lines are laid outside the building or over long distances. This is particularly important for bus lines.

Ensure the shield has adequate current-carrying capacity and is earthed at both ends for lines laid outside.

Surge Conductors:

Install surge conductors at the input to the switching cabinet to protect against voltage spikes.

Following these guidelines ensures reliable and interference-free operation of the PCD1/2 systems, enhancing the overall performance and longevity of the installation.

This manual provides a comprehensive guide to the technical aspects of the PCD1 and PCD2 components, essential for planning and installing control systems. Below are key terms and their definitions:

CPU (Central Processing Unit): The core of the Saia PCD® system, responsible for processing and executing instructions.

RIOs (Remote I/Os): Inputs and outputs connected to the CPU via a field bus such as Profibus, facilitating remote operations.

LIOs (Local I/Os): Inputs and outputs connected directly to the CPU via the I/O bus or a RIO, using the shortest possible cables for local operations.

The Overview section focuses on the essentials for planning and installing control systems with PCD1/2 components, covering:

Planning an application: Steps and considerations for designing a control system.

Cabling: Guidelines and best practices for wiring the system.

Detailed information on hardware, software, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting is provided in subsequent sections of the manual.
